Where the demand for virtual assistants comes from, and how far it sits from the people doing the work. For four out of five roles, the client's working day and the assistant's are close to exact opposites.
Key findings
- 82% of roles sit at least twelve hours from the person filling them. The median gap between a client's time zone and Manila is twelve hours. Only 18% sit within seven hours.
- Demand is overwhelmingly American, and concentrated on one coast. The United States accounts for 69.2% of roles, and half of those come from the eastern time zone alone.
- Close to nine in ten roles come from an English-speaking market. Adding the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to the US total.
- Distance does not slow hiring down. US roles fill in a median of 12 days. Roles from elsewhere fill in a median of 10. The difference is small and runs in the opposite direction to what a distance effect would predict.
- Australia and New Zealand are the exception. At two hours from Manila, that segment is the only part of this dataset where a client and an assistant share most of a working day.

Roughly seven in ten roles come from the United States. Adding the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, close to nine in ten come from an English-speaking market.
The remaining tenth spans Europe, the Middle East and Asia, including markets such as Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and continental Europe. Individual markets inside that group are reported together rather than separately, because several of them contain too few roles to break out without effectively identifying individual clients.

Almost half of American demand sits on the east coast, and just over a fifth on the west. This matters more than a regional breakdown normally would, because the two coasts are three hours apart from each other and twelve and fifteen hours from Manila respectively.

The median is twelve hours, which is as far apart as two working days can be. For four out of five roles in this dataset, when the client starts their morning, the person doing the work is finishing their evening or has already finished it.
That is the structural fact underneath this market. It is not a friction to be managed at the edges. It is the normal condition of the arrangement, and any question about how offshore hiring works in practice has to start there.
The Australian and New Zealand segment is the exception at two hours, and it is the only part of this dataset where a client and an assistant share most of a working day.

What we looked for and did not find
The time gap does not predict how long a role takes to fill. US roles, sitting twelve to fifteen hours away, fill in a median of 12 days. Roles from other regions fill in a median of 10 days. The difference is small and runs in the opposite direction to what a distance effect would predict.
Time zone does not predict what kind of work is requested. The mix of role categories from east coast clients is broadly similar to the mix from west coast and international clients.
We could not measure what employers require in terms of overlap. We set out to report how many roles require full overlap with the client's hours, partial overlap, asynchronous working or a night shift. 89% of role descriptions do not state a requirement either way. Rather than report figures drawn from 11% of roles as though they described the whole, we have left the question out. It is being added to our intake process and should be answerable in a future edition.
We report these because a relationship that turns out not to exist is still a result, and because a limitation named openly is worth more than one a reader has to find.

Methodology & Definitions

The VA Masters positions database, exported 2 September 2026. 318 roles opened between February 2026 and August 2026 that carry a recorded client time zone, out of 323 roles opened in that window.
Unit of measurement
The figures count roles, not clients. The 318 roles belong to 253 separate client companies, and a single company may open more than one role. Because the positions table includes roles opened by companies that are no longer active clients, this is a record of demand over the period rather than a snapshot of the current client base.
Time zone normalisation
The source field is free text and contains roughly forty distinct spellings of what are in practice eight zones. Values were normalised into publication groups. Countries outside the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are reported together as “other international” rather than individually, because several of those markets contain too few roles to report separately without effectively identifying individual clients.
Hour gaps
Calculated against Manila using standard time. Daylight saving shifts several of these by an hour for part of the year, which does not change any figure in this report at the level of precision reported.
Reporting threshold
Time-to-fill figures by region are shown only where at least 15 roles have a recorded close date. The UK, Australia and Canada fall below that threshold and are not reported separately.

Exclusions
Roles opened by VA Masters for its own internal team. Roles without a recorded time zone. Individual countries within the international group. Client names, individual role details, absolute counts of roles by region, and any figure relating to pay.
About this data
This report describes what passes through VA Masters, not the offshore hiring market as a whole. Every dataset of this kind reflects the business that produced it. Our client base skews toward the companies that find us, and most arrive on their own through search, through AI assistants, and through referrals from existing clients. The geographic mix here is shaped by where our content and reputation reach, which is a different thing from where global demand sits.
We think the sample still says something real. The regional split has been stable across successive periods, and it is consistent with what we reported from an earlier and separate dataset. But a reader should treat it as a detailed view of one large pipeline, not a measurement of national or global demand. Where a finding is unusually specific to our client mix, we say so in the section itself rather than leaving it to this note.
